The Natural Palette: Why We Never Dye Our Cashmere

White, camel, taupe, and a deep pewter grey are not a seasonal colour story. They are the four base tones that a Mongolian cashmere goat actually grows, and every OYU piece is left exactly as it came off the animal. The decision costs more than dyeing would, and it is the one colour choice we are not willing to make differently.
Four coats, not a colour chart
A cashmere goat's undercoat comes in a genuinely narrow set of natural pigments: bright white, a warm oatmeal-to-camel range, several shades of grey running from pale dove to near-charcoal, and a dark reddish-brown found in smaller numbers of animals, mostly in Mongolia's western provinces. Every one of these is determined entirely by the goat's own pigmentation genetics — there is no processing step that produces them. When a garment is described as "natural camel" or "undyed grey," it means the fibre was sorted by colour after combing and never touched a dye vat at any point in production.
The industry's long drift toward white

Since the 1980s, as cashmere exports to dyeing-heavy Western and Japanese markets expanded, buyers across Mongolia and Inner Mongolia developed a strong preference for white fibre, because pure white can be dyed evenly into virtually any shade, while grey or brown fibre limits a dyer to darker, muted results. Over roughly three decades, that preference fed back into breeding practice: herders selecting for white-coated goats, because white fibre consistently earned a better price per kilogram at the point of sale. The consequence, documented by several fibre researchers working across Mongolia's herding regions, is a national herd now skewed considerably toward white animals, with naturally grey and brown goats making up a shrinking minority of the total population.
We buy some of our fibre specifically from herders who have kept smaller flocks of grey and brown goats — animals that would otherwise fetch a lower price precisely because they cannot be dyed. Batbayar, a herder in Övörkhangai province whose family has kept a mixed-colour herd for three generations, told us he had considered culling his grey goats in favour of white ones twice, in years when the price gap was wide enough to matter to his household budget. He kept them, in the end, partly out of habit and partly, he said, because the grey fibre had always struck him as the finer of the two — a claim our own micron testing has, more often than not, borne out.
What dyeing actually does to fibre
Dyeing is not a neutral process. Fixing colour into a protein fibre like cashmere typically requires heat, and often a mildly acidic or alkaline bath, both of which can subtly degrade the cuticle of the fibre — the microscopic scaled outer layer that gives cashmere its handfeel and helps it resist felting. The effect on any single garment is small and, for most dyed cashmere, not something a wearer would ever notice. But it is not nothing, and undyed fibre starts its working life with one less variable applied to it. There is also a simpler, less technical reason we favour natural colour: dye lots vary between batches, while a goat's own pigment does not, so an undyed camel sweater bought this year and one bought in three years' time will match far more reliably than two dyed pieces ever could.
A limited, honest palette
The trade-off is real, and worth stating plainly: working only in natural colour means we cannot offer cobalt blue or forest green, and a handful of customers ask for exactly that every season. What we can offer instead is a palette that will not shift, fade unevenly, or require the kind of colour-matching apology that dyed reorders sometimes need. For a brand built around pieces meant to be worn for a decade or more rather than replaced each year, that consistency has mattered more to us than range.
